The Baton Rouge Health District (BRHD) is both a physical footprint of healthcare assets and a nonprofit organization that is creating collaborative healthcare solutions.
This collaborative initiative is aimed at transforming the area along Essen, Bluebonnet, Perkins, and I-10 into a high-performing destination for healthcare. It brings together major healthcare employers, educational institutions, and other stakeholders to improve health outcomes, enhance infrastructure, and stimulate economic development.
The BRHD was established in response to the critical need for better planning and coordination identified in East Baton Rouge’s comprehensive plan, FuturEBR. With significant healthcare infrastructure already concentrated in the area, the goal is to leverage these assets to provide better healthcare services and foster economic growth.
The Baton Rouge Health District is structured around four main pillars: creating a healthy place, enhancing workforce and education, fostering innovation and research, and building a strong coalition. These pillars guide the District's efforts to advance sustainable health solutions, enrich community well-being, and promote healthier living environments in Baton Rouge.
Planned improvements include a continuous health loop trail in partnership with BREC, several MOVEBR complete street enhancements, and additional signage. The REACH gateway enhancement project will enhance the landscape of the entry points into the district and improve signage throughout the district for easier access by all.
Planned improvements include enhanced roadways and infrastructure to ease congestion, development of new medical facilities like a Diabetes and Obesity Center, and the establishment of a more connected, walkable community that supports health and wellness.
The BRHD is supported by federal grants, local funding, and partnerships with prominent local stakeholders, including Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center, Baton Rouge General Medical Center, Ochsner, Louisiana Blue, Woman's Hospital, and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. These partnerships are essential for the financial and strategic development of the Health District.
The District aims to create a synergistic environment where healthcare providers can collaborate more effectively, leading to improved health outcomes for the community and a stronger local economy. It also aims to make Baton Rouge a national destination for healthcare.
Part of the District’s strategy includes implementing a smart traffic plan to improve flow and reduce congestion, making the area more accessible and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents and visitors.
BRHD is working in partnership with the Mayor's Office and the MOVEBR initiative to improve the district landscape and the congestion and flow of traffic.
Community members are encouraged to participate in public meetings, provide feedback on development plans, and stay engaged through the Health District’s website and newsletters.
